Rep or no Rep?

AVS did some ranking of reps. Some of these guys would not get ranked at all in my humble opinion. I visited a few on this list years ago when I was rep-shopping NYC. Some of them were really approachable, and some where downright arrogant (the kind of flat-world mentality that does not acknowledge the existence of anything beyond the East and Hudson Rivers :) )

Recently, I was exploring the whole idea of working with a rep again. Been doing just fine without one for a while now. But, with the recent onslaught of big and complex estimates, I’m reconsidering working with a rep again. Burning the midnight oil etc. has never been a problem for me, and I have a great network of producers.  Half of my research shows that having a rep makes you look expensive, fat and bloated, and you miss out on some great shoots. But, in some instances, you don’t even get considered unless you have a rep. There are times when I am so busy that I cannot see the wood for the trees and it would be great to have a smart rep who can assist on the business end, and weed out the mediocre projects. It’s a tough one.

There needs to be ranking system of reps who are smart, internet savvy and who have a clear idea of how they are evolving in relationship to to the way photography is changing. A ranking system from the photographers POV, if you will. Maybe the websites are a clue.
