No need to elaborate on this one - it’s all over the place.

more...Spam does not work. Spam can be any unwelcome, unsolicited attention seeking. It was the main reason for closing my Constant Contact account last year. Email promos seemed all the rage two years ago, I am surprised some photographers are still doing it. The tracking of emailed promo only shows who clicked through to your website. It does not measure the level of appreciation for your work or whether or not you may get a job out of that emailed promo. Check out APE’s post here with about 50 hilarious and not-so-hilarious comments. APE really has a great blog, with some great posts. But, reading through the comments generally there seems to be a lot of whiners out there.
If I can offer any advice it is really KNOW your client base & potential clients and what their preferences are whether it is mailed promos, showing your book in person, the odd phone call, PDF books or promo, emailed promos… EVERYONE is different. Knowing your client or potential clients’ preferences goes a long way towards a healthy communication foundation, that paves the way for easier production when you do get awarded the job.
more...During some recent consultation, I was advised to create a page full of testimonials. Is it shameless self-promotion or is it helpful to future clients deciding whether or not to shoot with you?

Being married to a designer, you get to see a lot of this kind of stuff. I agree, Papyrus must go, Times can stay (except in print ads).

And its the weekend already!
Two weeks of estimating, a very permanent-like road trip and two photo shoots. Some of the estimates were approved. Others were just fishing for prices - you know who you are. Aren’t you worried about your credibility? Qué Horror!
Then there are the estimates that are just stalled. Schedules’ getting tight guys, make a decision already!
Spring has sprung, and I missed out on APE’s free promo. Oh well! Next time.

more...Sometimes a strange day seems reflective of strange times:
Been at the discussion on Heather’s Blog. Go and check it out. So strange, as I just got a call about a big shoot from a Creative Director. No, not a Cost Consultant, not an Art Buyer and not an Art Director. If I had a nickel for every…

Jesse Adams sent me these links which is an interesting debate indeed:

Some very important people (They are important to me, OK), saying similar things here, here, here and here. Sometimes there is a loosely connected thought process out there that is really intelligent. A lot to think about here.

My in-laws tell me that there was a time not too long ago that it would have been considered inappropriate to display flowers like these.

AVS says (in a post titled: “Word on the Street”):
“…is that some agencies out there are shutting their doors…first sign of a recession for our business? “
Please say it isn’t so! Hush! Enough people using the dreaded “R” word and we will have one!
Are these changes only economy-driven, or is it the perception of advertising itself that is changing? Historically, haven’t agencies (not the giant ones) always been closing their doors and new ones opening? My wife just got hired at a brand new agency.
Spike at Brains on Fire wrote an insightful post about this kind of thing earlier this year.

Hence the switch around. Still ironing out some bugs in the code so please be patient, my “code elves” are going a little nuts right now!
If you still have the old RSS feed, please make sure your reader gets the NEW RSS feed.

I have had the privilege of working with David Cornell a few times. Definitely one of the most driven film-directors I have met so far. Once, I spent almost a week in a helicopter, which eventually quit on us, trying to find the perfect range of mountains for a Jeep commercial. Come to think of it, every project we worked on together involved some adventure of sorts.
Well, he has brought some magic to the new GE Monogram Collection. David - you’re an inspiration!
